Definition

A congenital cardiovascular malformation in which there is a remnant of the arterial duct (ductus arteriosus) that is not in its expected position between the aorta or arch vessels and the pulmonary arterial circulation.

While in the setting of a left aortic arch the arterial ligament is expected to be seen stretching from the concavity of the aortic arch to the pulmonary artery confluence, in the case of a right aortic arch one end of the ligament can normally be found at the base of the innominate (brachiocephalic) artery.
