Definition
A congenital cardiovascular malformation of a pulmonary artery, proximal to its first branch, in which there is luminal narrowing (below the lower limit of normal adjusted for body size).

Coding Notes
The stenosis or hypoplasia may be isolated or associated with other cardiovascular lesions. Coarctation of the pulmonary artery is related to abnormal extension of the arterial duct (ductus arteriosus) into a pulmonary arterial branch, more frequently the left branch. This is to be distinguished from narrowing or hypoplasia of the pulmonary trunk (main pulmonary artery).
