Definition

A congenital cardiovascular malformation in which one branch pulmonary artery arises from the ascending aorta and the other branch pulmonary artery arises from the pulmonary trunk (main pulmonary artery).

One pulmonary artery arises from the ascending aorta and the other pulmonary artery arises from the right ventricle. This does include origin of the right or left pulmonary artery from the innominate (brachiocephalic) artery or the aortic arch via a patent arterial duct (ductus arteriosus) or collateral artery.
