Definition

A congenital cardiac malformation where both atria connect to a common atrioventricular valve which characteristically has 4 or 5 leaflets including superior and inferior bridging leaflets with a single annulus. The common valve may have one or two major orifices depending on the absence or presence of fusion of the bridging leaflets to each other or the septal crest.
