Discussion: Anatomic views of the right and left sides of the heart demonstrate the discordant atrioventricular connections associated with congenitally corrected transposition. There is a muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD). The percentage of hearts with ventricular septal defects is approximately the same when comparing hearts with discordant atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial connections to those hearts with concordant connections. |
The superior (SCV) and inferior (ICV) caval veins drain into the morphologically right atrium (mRA) on the right side of the heart, in the normal fashion. The morphologically right atrium is connected to the morphologically left ventricle (mLV) on the right side of the heart with the mitral valve (MV) in the inlet component. The tricuspid valve (TV) guards the inlet of this left-sided morphologically right ventricle (mRV). The aorta (Ao) is connected to the left-sided morphologically right ventricle, the arterial valve separated from the atrioventricular valve by the infundibulum.
