Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Long axis view of left ventricle and atrium

Description: This long axis view shows a hypertrophied left ventricle and aortic valvar atresia. There was critical aortic stenosis and premature closure of the oval foramen documented in utero. The leaflets of the mitral valve are thickened and attached directly to the tips of the papillary muscle (mitral arcade). Although this section only shows one papillary muscle, examination of the heart showed two papillary muscles; therefore this is not a parachute mitral valve. The endocardial fibroelastosis within the left atrium and left ventricle is consistent with the in utero echocardiographic findings.
