Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Antero-superior view

Description: This anatomical view shows the great vessels as they exit the ventricular mass. The aorta (A) is about half of the size of the pulmonary trunk (PT) and the arterial duct (PAD) is widely patent. The aorta is small overall with hypoplasia at the isthmus (yellow arrow). This narrowed segment of the aorta is located between the left subclavian artery (red asterisk) and the arterial duct. (DAo-descending aorta, LAA-left atrial appendage, RAA-right atrial appendage, SCV-superior caval vein)

Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Lateral view of the left chest

Description: The left lung has been lifted from the pleural cavity in this in situ, lateral view, demonstrating the aorta-arterial duct junction, the aortic arch and the isthmus. There is hypoplasia of the aortic isthmus between the left subclavian artery (LSC) and the aorta-arterial duct junction where a coarctation is also seen. The transverse arch is also small.  The arterial duct is widely patent. The brachiocephalic trunk (BCT) and the left common carotid (LCC) arteries arise from the aorta quite close to one another and in the usual fashion.
