Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Right oblique view

Description: This heart has an unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect. Viewed from the right atrium, there is hypoplasia of the left component of the common atrioventricular valve (LAVV) in comparison to the right component (RAVV). In this image, the common atrioventricular junction and the crest of the ventricular septum (yellow dots) are easily seen. (A-aorta, ICV-inferior caval vein, RAA-right atrial appendage, SCV-superior caval vein).

Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Opened left ventricle in clamshell fashion

Description: The characteristic ‘scooping’ of the ventricular septum (yellow dots) is illustrated in this small left ventricle. Note the solitary papillary muscle (SPM). All of the tendinous chords attach to this papillary muscle, producing the lesion frequently described as ‘parachute’ malformation. There is a fibrous scar in the anterior wall of the left ventricle. (A-aorta, ICV-inferior caval vein, LV-left ventricular septum, PT-pulmonary trunk, RAA-right atrial appendage, RAVV-right component of the common atrioventricular valve, SCV-superior caval vein).
