Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Superior right atrial view

Description: This heart is in anatomic position and tilted forward to show the mouth of the superior caval vein (SCV) overriding the superior rim of the oval fossa (OF). The so-called sinus venosus atrial septal defect is not a true atrial septal defect, but an interatrial communication (IAC). It is outside the confines of the oval fossa or the true interatrial septum. This defect is usually associated with partially anomalous pulmonary venous return of the right upper pulmonary vein. In this case the upper and middle pulmonary veins (short arrows) drain into the superior caval vein. (CS-coronary sinus, ICV-inferior caval vein, RLPV-right lower pulmonary vein, TV-tricuspid valve, )

Modality: Anatomic specimen

Orientation: Superior right atrial view

Description: The same heart pictured in A050501-6a shows a probe passing through the fibrofatty conduit that is formed secondary to the overriding superior caval vein (SCV). This pathway taken by the probe is actually outside the heart and above the superior rim of the oval fossa.  This defect is an interatrial communication rather than a true atrial septal defect. (IAC-interatrial commnunication, ICV-inferior caval vein, OF-oval fossa, RUPV-right upper pulmonary vein, TV-tricuspid valve)

Modality: Cardiac magnetic resonance images (gadolinium-enhanced angiography)

Orientation: Anterior view - 3D volume rendered image

Description: This images are derived from the MRI angiogram of an adult patient with a superior sinus venosus ASD and partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right upper and middle pulmonary veins into the superior caval vein. This three dimensional reconstructed image is derived from the MR angiogram of an adult with a superior sinus venosus ASD and partially anomalous pulmonary venous connection of the right upper and middle pulmonary veins into the superior caval vein.

Modality: Cardiac magnetic resonance images (gadolinium-enhanced angiography)

Orientation: Anterior view - raw single plane image

Description: The arrows point the anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right upper and middle pulmonary veins into the superior caval vein. The arrows point to the anomalous pulmonary venous connection of the right upper and middle pulmonary veins into the superior caval vein.
